Barnstaple is the main market town of North Devon and is the main location in the area for the provision of further and higher education, for the District General Hospital and for comparison shopping facilities. Northern Devon has a £2.2 billion economy which supports around 7,700 businesses and 66,000 jobs.
The North Devon Link Road (A361) and the Atlantic Highway (A39) run east-west, connecting the area to the M5 and to north Cornwall. Rail travel is provided by the improved Tarka Line, connecting Barnstaple and Exeter Central stations.
Barnstaple also acts as the gateway to many of North Devon’s best beaches, including Croyde, Woolacombe and Saunton Sands.
The North Devon and Torridge Local Plan 2011-2031 confirms, Barnstaple will be the focus for future
growth in northern Devon. Significant levels of development will be accommodated in the town consistent with its scale and strategic importance as a service and employment centre. Of the planned provision for a minimum of 17,220 dwellings and 84.9 hectares of employment land, Barnstaple will deliver 4,139 homes and 21.6ha of employment.
